Double Identity
The factor that makes this series of ten diptychs created by these artists unique is that each artist working alone created one half of each diptych and the two halves were joined to become one.
This way of working is not a commone practice as artists usually prefer to exhibit their own work. This formula, if it is one, was tried last summer (2006) by a group of artists at the historic church in Grand Barachois, N.B
Forty years of painting, attending exhibitiions in Europe, the US. and Canada and reviewing art magazines have never uncovered two such artists, male and female, francophone and anglophoneproducing a body of work using this unique process.
It is always difficult for an artist working alone in a studio to decide when a painting is finished as he or she must be satisfied with the end result. Only the artist using his individualized rules of aesthetics developed over a long period of time is capable of making this decision. This process becomes even more complex with the knowledge that the finished piece will be placed next to the work of another artist.
Consequently, the original set of rules must be modified and one must deal with even more doubt that may surround the resolution of a piece.
It had to be decided to work separately to see in reality if this made any sense.

¤ About Angel Gomez
Angel Gomez was born in Segovia Spain in 1942. Since his arrival in
Canada
in 1980, and as one vastly influenced by his surroundings, the artist
has
sought to reconcile his Spanish roots with the feeling of isolation he
has
experienced and to describe these experiences in paint.
The most recent paintings by Angel Gomez trace and express a landscape
of
grief and loss and the search for meaning in expressions of hope and
love.
Where his earlier work contained a multi-layered series of abstract
colour
planes and framed portals through which viewers entered his spaces,
this
recent series reeplaces these perceptual doorways with the recognizable
imagery of fruit and flowers.
In these paintings the still-lifes have a personal elegiac dimension
but
also contain a message of hopefulness and rebirth. It is in the
interval
between these tensions that Gomez's work has power and meaning: the
tensions
between the abstract and the real, between bright hues and deep
tonality;
between the personal and the symbolic: and between the fragile beauty
of the
flower and the resilience of the human spirit. To experience Angel
Gomez'
new paintings is to pass through metaphorical doorways in order to
understand the nature of passing and the progress of love.
