Double Identity
The factor that makes this series of ten diptychs created by these artists unique is that each artist working alone created one half of each diptych and the two halves were joined to become one. This way of working is not a commone practice as artists usually prefer to exhibit their own work. This formula, if it is one, was tried last summer (2006) by a group of artists at the historic church in Grand Barachois, N.B Forty years of painting, attending exhibitiions in Europe, the US. and Canada and reviewing art magazines have never uncovered two such artists, male and female, francophone and anglophoneproducing a body of work using this unique process. It is always difficult for an artist working alone in a studio to decide when a painting is finished as he or she must be satisfied with the end result. Only the artist using his individualized rules of aesthetics developed over a long period of time is capable of making this decision. This process becomes even more complex with the knowledge that the finished piece will be placed next to the work of another artist. Consequently, the original set of rules must be modified and one must deal with even more doubt that may surround the resolution of a piece. It had to be decided to work separately to see in reality if this made any sense.
